Loxley Silver Band was originally established in 1889 in Loxley Methodist Church; which was built in 1885 and originally named 'Loxley Wesleyan Methodist Chapel'; four years later 'Loxley Wesleyan Brass Band' was inaugurated and has rehearsed until very recently in the band room below the church.
For many years the band could be seen and heard throughout the local community and especially at the annual Whitsuntide march down to Hillsborough.
The 'Whit March' (or 'Walk') has long since fallen out of favour, largely because of the alterations to the traditional Bank Holidays; Whitsuntide is the week after Whitsunday and the eighth week after Easter. Whitsunday, the seventh Sunday after Easter, takes its name from the practice of wearing white for christenings on the day.
The band has evolved through several name changes; 'Loxley Wesleyan Brass Band', ‘Loxley Methodist Silver Band’, ‘Loxley Silver Prize Band’ until the present day ‘Loxley Silver Band’ and has managed to maintain playing since 1889 without a break through two world wars.
Based in Stannington, near Loxley, North Sheffield, the band continues to have a strong following to this day. ‘Loxley’ is now a local community band with a friendly family atmosphere, with players ranging from 10-80 years! The Band play various local events such as garden parties, concerts, galas etc. throughout the year and play carols and local Christmas tunes at a variety of venues and public houses during December: visit our Concert List page for details of current events.
