A bit about Loxley Band

Loxley Silver Band was originally established way back in 1889; based in Loxley, North Sheffield, the band continues to have a strong following to this day. Loxley is a local village band with a friendly family atmosphere, with players ranging from 10-80 years! The Band play various local events such as garden parties, concerts, galas etc. throughout the year and play carols at a variety of venues and public houses during December. Loxley Silver Band, who have a varied and extensive library of music and are well known within the local community, rehearse on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:45pm to 9:30pm in the ‘Band Room’ below Loxley Methodist Chapel; the band welcomes all to come along and have a play.

As well as having a senior band that rehearses twice a week Loxley has a training band that rehearse on a Thursday evening from 6:30pm to 7:30pm; new members are always welcome for the main band or training band (some instruments are may be available to loan) including those who would like the opportunity to ‘restart’.

“The Musical Director is Mark Rotchell, who is married with three grown up children and one Grandson and first joined Loxley Methodist Silver Band, as it was then known, at the age of 11, sitting alongside Derrick Garner, who is still an active life-long member. Mark then joined Stannington Brass Band, playing in their first National Finals, at the same time studying under Derrick Ashmore.

From the age of sixteen, Mark has pursued his other interest as a Chapel Organist and he also sings in Worral Male Voice Choir. Mark’s first stint as Conductor with Loxley Band (where he met his wife Alison) originally ended due to work commitments. He has been Musical Director of two local choirs, but in September 2008 accepted the invitation to return to Loxley Silver Band.
